Declaration of cooperation between the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and the French data protection authority (CNIL)
30 January 2026
This declaration will strengthen their understanding of new technologies and enable them to work together to address the challenges posed by the protection of personal data in the lives of French and Canadian citizens.
The Privacy Commissioner of Canada, Philippe DUFRESNE, and the President of the CNIL, Marie-Laure DENIS, signed a declaration of cooperation between the two authorities on the sidelines of the virtual meeting of the G7 of data protection authorities on December 10, 2025. The Canadian authority thus concluded its year as host of the Round Table while Canada held the G7 presidency.
The cooperation agreement provides for, among other things:
- conducting joint research related to new technologies and data protection issues;
- sharing best practices and experiences, including on methods used by the Parties in the course of their investigations.
- sharing their regulatory strategies; and
- organizing workshops.
This partnership will provide an opportunity to strengthen institutional and human ties between the Office and the CNIL through joint projects, thereby sharing their understanding of new technologies and enabling them to work together to address the challenges posed by the protection of personal data in all areas of everyday life for Canadian and French citizens.
