The second issue of CNIL Innovation and Foresight newsletter has been published, and it's dealing with the smartphone as an object of paradox: both collector and producer of personal data, it remains quite a mystery and a "black box" for its owner, even though users are clearly expressing a strong need for protection and control of their data.
Facing that opacity, illustrated by several recent data breach scandals, CNIL adopted a comprehensive framework for action which particularly aims at analyzing in depth the smartphones' ecosystem, deciphering it and anticipating trends in technologies, uses and business models. Eventually, CNIL will invite the main actors to evolve towards a more transparent and privacy-friendly range of services and to promote best practices in this industry.
This 2nd Newsletter on Innovation and Foresight focuses on a more complete analysis of the results of a survey by Mediametrie Institute for the CNIL on the uses and behaviors of smartphones users. Stefana BROADBENT, digital anthropologist at University College London, also delivers us her views on the subject.
